Created around 1910, the Elaborate Peony Table Lamp is among Tiffany Studios’ most ambitious and celebrated floral shade designs. With its lush composition and richly varied color palette, the peony blossom proved an ideal subject for Tiffany’s mastery of leaded glass. One of the studio’s most naturalistic creations, the Elaborate Peony captures a dynamic interplay of buds and full, mature blooms, arranged to suggest an impressionistic glimpse of nature paused in a fleeting moment. Beyond its visual splendor, the peony carried deep cultural and symbolic significance for Tiffany. A cherished motif in Eastern art—an enduring influence on his aesthetic—the peony was revered as the “King of Flowers” and symbolized strength and prosperity.
The lamp rests on a blown peacock glass base with a bronze foot adorned with concentric circles and beaded trim. Peacock glass, one of Tiffany Studios’ early innovations, was crafted by combining five different types of glass, including gold aventurine. Originally developed by Venetian glassmakers in Murano, gold aventurine was produced by dissolving copper particles into molten glass. Tiffany’s artisans recreated this shimmering effect by adding copper or brass filings to their glass formulas, yielding a dazzling, glitter-like appearance. In this piece, gold aventurine is blended with hues of blue, olive green, and translucent amber in a pulled peacock feather pattern. A contemporary critic once described aventurine as “ornamentation at once consistent, lovely, and full of mystery.” Together, these elements merge into a timeless masterpiece—where nature’s beauty, craftsmanship, and symbolism converge in a singular expression of Tiffany’s artistic vision.
