Daum Freres’ “Paysage d’Hiver” krater vase is a masterpiece in both perspectival composition and mood painting. The vase depicts a dense forest of birch trees receding into the background. Daum enhances the horizon’s visual impact by framing it with the crowns of wilted birch trees. A swirling background is created by a layer of cadmium yellow and orange powdered glass. Each tree trunk is set in sharp relief by acid etching the surrounding background. In the foreground, thick birch trees are given even great depth. Clear glass with horizontally hatched umber enamel reveals the saturated color background through panes of clear glass. Each branch has been expertly extended with thin sable brushes. The floor, branches, and trunks are highlighted with delicate touches of white enamel snow.
